Born September 23, 1926 in Hamlet, North Carolina, John Coltrane's musical career began at a young age. His study of the E-flat horn and clarinet was sparked by his father, who played several instruments. As he grew older, Coltrane switched to the saxophone due to his shifting musical influences. After the 2nd world war, Coltrane played with several bands eventually leading to his work with the Miles Davis Quintet in 1958.
