Azymuth is an electrified trio from Brazil that calls its music samba doido, which means "crazy samba." The actual sounds, though, are not so crazy: an intelligent, high-voltage blend of Brazilian rhythms, jazz, and funk with occasional acoustic episodes that gained a sizable following in the 1980s. The members of the group include:
José Roberto Bertrami - on piano and keyboards - click and enjoy "Un Amigo"
Alex Malheiros on bass - click and enjoy the tune "Countryroad"
Ivan Conti on drums - click and enjoy "May i have this dance"
You will soon understand that they not only play their instruments (damn good) but manage all the knowledge to get that incredible sound. They're also moving in territory that's a bit more abstract as well – using some noisier electronics amidst the smoother ones, to create a style that's somewhere between fusion, electric funk, and some of the more soaring Brazilian rhythms of the post-bossa years!
